Balboa Park has 17 museums, 15 gardens, and more free programming than most families realize. Here's how to navigate 1,200 acres of family gold without losing your mind.

Balboa Park is one of America's great public cultural spaces. 1,200 acres of Spanish-Colonial architecture, world-class museums, performance venues, restaurants, and gardens — all in the center of San Diego. For families, it's an embarrassment of riches. The challenge is knowing how to use it.

Free Tuesday Museum Days

San Diego residents get free admission to Balboa Park museums on rotating Tuesdays each month. One Tuesday per month is designated for each institution. Planning your visit around these dates can save a family of four $60–$100.

The Fleet Science Center (Best for STEM Kids)

Planetarium shows, interactive science exhibits, and the IMAX dome that screens both educational documentaries and Hollywood films. The planetarium show "Incoming!" about asteroid impacts is consistently voted best by kids.

The Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater

The separate IMAX theater with a massive tilted dome screen. The experience of lying back and watching space-themed films on a 76-foot dome is genuinely awe-inspiring. Worth the extra ticket for the experience.

The Japanese Friendship Garden

11 acres of authentic Japanese garden design with koi ponds, a bonsai pavilion, and seasonal exhibitions. The children's garden area has interactive water features and stepping stones. Peaceful enough to recharge between museums.

The Model Railroad Museum

Sounds modest, acts extraordinary. The largest indoor model railroad museum in North America. Kids who've never cared about trains become transfixed. The miniature San Diego cityscape from the 1950s-90s is uncanny in its detail.

Balboa Park Youth Programs

The park's institutions collectively run dozens of youth programs — ceramics at the San Diego Art Institute, photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts, science at the Fleet. Check individual museum sites for current enrollment.
